Experience and expertise:
Kate’s main expertise are in pasture agronomy, grazing management, native pasture management, soils and fertilisers. Kate has delivered the Beefcheque and Lambcheque programs for 6 years, giving her cattle and sheep livestock feeding and management expertise. She also has a large amount of experience with assisting beef and sheep producers to respond to and recover from emergencies including drought, fire and locusts.
Kate took over from Lisa Warn in running the Broadford Grazing Experiment in its final year in 2003 and was responsible for collating and presenting the results to many farming groups throughout Victoria and interstate in the following years. This, together with an ongoing agronomy role for the Meat and Wool team made Kate known for her knowledge in the areas of rotational grazing methods and pasture agronomy.
More recently, Kate has played a key role in the EverGraze project team for the design and ongoing management of research and extension components. Through this project, she has developed a strong knowledge in native pasture management and the concept of “right perennial plant, right place, right purpose”. Kate has presented concepts and results from EverGraze to a range of audiences throughout southern Australia.
Kate’s masters project researched the knowledge, attitudes and practices of meat and wool producers in southern Australia relating to introduced and native perennial pasture use and management. This was a market research exercise for the EverGraze project and is currently being written up into papers.
Farming background:
Kate’s parents run a family farm in Bonnie Doon where they have a mixture of undulating and steep hill country. They run 1700 crossbred ewes and 1000 wethers. Kate advises her parents for the agronomy and grazing management strategies for the farm. Many of the principles from Beefcheque, EverGraze and the Broadford Grazing Experiment have been successfully implemented on the farm.
